Cityscape: Ski resort with history
Borovets, the oldest and most famous Bulgarian mountain resort, is situated
on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountain at an altitude of 1350
meters. Established at the end of the 19th century as a hunting place for Bulgarian
kings, Borovets has been developed into a modern year round resort.
Borovets enjoys a breathtaking location huddled among age-old pine woods right at the foot of Mount Moussala (2925m) which is the highest peak on the Balkan peninsula. 72 km away from Sofia, Borovets is easily accessible at any time of the year. The resort is the perfect place for ski fun and recreation. The winter is mild and with plenty of snow from mid December
until April. In winter there are 45km of slopes and 20km of cross county trails weaving their way through the stunning scenery of Rila mountain. Skiing and snowboarding is available for all levels.
During the summer Borovets is marvelous, offering clean fresh air, serene centuries-old pine forests, meadows of fragrant flowers sprinkled with herbs, blue lakes and majestic snow-capped peaks. For nature-lovers, the resort is a favorite vacation spot and starting point of the many hiking routes winding throughout the Rila mountains
Worth seeing
While in Borovets you can make a trip to the Seven Rila Lakes, situated in the northwestern part of Rila Mountain. The chain of the Seven Rila Lakes is the largest, most picturesque and visited group of lakes in all Rila. The lakes are found at differing altitudes and the highest one is located at 2535m above sea level.
Going out
Borovets has much to offer for party animals. The resort is full
of restaurant, bars and clubs. For great lunch or dinner the Elite Bar is your choice. Katy Steak restaurant offers excellent atmosphere and food. 101 Cocktails and Buzz Bar are groovy party places.
